Telegram becomes inaccessible in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has seen widespread restrictions and reduced access to the Telegram messaging service. Users in different regions of the country, as well as several Kazakhstani media outlets, have reported problems uploading and sending media files.

“JSC Kazakhtelecom is reporting restrictions and reduced availability of the Telegram messaging service. According to our monitoring data, there has also been a sharp decline in Telegram traffic at key international peering points in Frankfurt and Moscow,” the national telecom operator’s press service said.

The company stated that no internal outages or technical failures had been detected within Kazakhtelecom’s infrastructure and that the operator had sent an official request to Telegram’s administrative and technical team.

So far, the largest number of complaints has come from residents of Astana, as well as the Karaganda, Pavlodar and Kostanay regions.

The disruption affecting the popular messaging service comes amid a broader trend of restrictions on Kazakhstan’s information and digital space.
