We call on members of parliament not to turn security rules into a tool for restricting journalistic activity
The Legal Media Center Public Foundation, the Adil Soz Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech, the MediaNet International Center for Journalism, and the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law express concern over changes to the procedures governing journalists’ work in the building of the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech “Adil Soz” has appealed to the Ministry of Culture and Information, asking it to protect the rights of Karaganda journalist Murat Nurgalimov, who was held administratively liable following a conflict with a police officer.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has published a statement in response to the sentencing of former Orda editor-in-chief Gulnara Bazhkenova, who was sentenced to eight years in prison by a court on 18 August. The international organisation considers the case part of the mounting pressure on the media in Kazakhstan ahead of the parliamentary elections.
