The code of professional ethics of journalists redux?

19 june 2019

The Ministry of Information had the horn again about the new code of ethics for journalists. But what's wrong with the last code? And the previous one? And the one before last? Each of them contained a set of decent - and inactive - edifications. Nevertheless, there is surely will be a media association that will wants to catch up with the government’s initiative in the hope of leading the “self-regulation” of its colleagues in future.

The position of "Adil soz", that I have been explaining for the last ten years is the following:

1. Ethical codes are used in the countries where there is no media law  (and most of he countries do not have such a law), where laws do not threaten a journalist with prison and ruining their professional activities.

2. Local, intra-editorial, but not global ethical codes are effective.

With our legislation and law enforcement practice, the self-regulation of the journalistic community is the self-regulation of galley slaves.

So let's first decriminalize defamation, insult, dissemination false information; regulate the deadlines for defamation actions; regulate moral damages; simplify the creation and compulsory ban of the media - and then set a moral code and self-regulation.
