In Karaganda the rector of the university accused the journalist of illegally gathering information about his private life

10 march 2017

On March 9 in the Kazybekbiy district court of Karaganda court hearings began on the accusation of the correspondent of the news agency "Tengrinews" Nikolai Kravets in libel (Article 130 of the Criminal Code of the RK) and illegal collection of information about private life (Article 147 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan). The process was initiated by the rector of the Central Kazakhstan Academy Bakhytbay Zhunusov.

The reason for the lawsuit were the articles published on the website of the news agency on January 30 - "The Faberge Egg and diamonds for $ 1.2 million were stolen in the Karaganda region" and "Became known the name of Karaganda resident who a Faberge egg was stolen from." Both articles were based on the sentence passed upon the thieves. The sentence itself was published on the website of the Supreme Court.

In the second article N. Kravets stated that the victim of the theft was the rector of the Central Kazakhstan Academy.

The private prosecutor claims that Nikolai Kravets slandered him, saying that the Faberge egg and diamonds were stolen from the house of a certain value, while the materials of the criminal case refer to coins depicting the Faberge egg valued more than 2 million tenge and gold jewelry of a total value of more than 23 million tenge.

Bakhytbai Zhunusov also thinks that the journalist illegally collected information about his private life by sending queries to the Karaganda regional prosecutor's office and the State Revenue Department asking whether B. Zhunusov has foreign accounts and whether "it is planned to check is a corruption component took place."
