The Officer of Financial Police of West Kazakhstan Oblast Arman Kozhakhmetov, the Deputy for Akim (Governor) of Terekti District Abzal Braliev and the Head of Personnel of Akim (Governor) Taskalinsk District Baurzhan Imashev have filed suits about protection of honour and dignity against newspaper "Uralskaya Nedelya", journalist Lukpan Akhmedyarov and Makhambet Koneyev as a source of information. The charges originated from article "History repeats twice" by L. Akhmedyarov, which was published in the newspaper "Uralskaya Nedelya" on July 27, 2012.
Except disclaimer, plaintiffs demanded all together KZT sixteen millions as recovery of moral damage compensation.
On November 09, 2012 court №2 of Uralsk (West Kazakhstan oblast) has issued a ruling by suit of Arman Kuzhakhmetov. Defendants had to publish a disclaimer, concerning criminal record of plaintiff, his complicity in murder of the famous sportsman Oralbek Kuzhageldin in 1999 and they had to recover KZT one million and five hundred thousand in favour of officer of financial police.
According to order of Board of Appeals of West Kazakhstan Oblast Court which was issued on October 02, 2012, Lukpan Akhmedyarov and newspaper "Uralskaya Nedelya" had to recover KZT5000000 as moral damage compensation of business reputation in favour of Ex-Head of Department of Internal Policy Tlekkabyl Imashev. It was a wasteful amount for journalist and newspaper.
On April 19, 2012 L. Akhmedyarov was attacked brutally. The attack was labeled as an "intention to attempt homicide". Akhmedyarov is a reporter for the weekly “Uralskaya Nedelya” in Kazakhstan. Lukpan Akhmedyarov is the 2012 winner of the Peter Mackler Award. International Organization “Reporters Without Borders” awards this prize. The Peter Mackler Award is rewarded journalists, who report news in the country honestly, courageously, where freedom of the press is either not guaranteed or not recognized.
The government institutions and state officials have filed 21 suits about protection of honour, dignity and business reputation against newspaper “Uralskaya Nedelya”, owner of the newspaper LLP "Journalistkaya Initsiativa", editor-in-chief Tamara Eslyamova and journalists over past three years.
