Lukpan Akhmedyarov named 2012 winner of Peter Mackler Award

Akhmedyarov is a reporter for the weekly “Uralskaya Nedelya” in Kazakhstan. Lukpan Akhmedyarov is the 2012 winner of the Peter Mackler Award.
International Organization “Reporters Without Borders” awards this prize. The Peter Mackler Award is rewarded journalists, who report news in the country honestly, courageously, where freedom of the press is either not guaranteed or not recognized.
Camile Mackler, Project Director for the Peter Mackler Award, said that “Mr. Akhmedyarov has shown enormous courage, protecting principles of the independent journalism and right of Kazakhstan's people to freedom of the press. Lukpan Akhmedyarov was awarded for his investigative coverage of corruption, as well as paper “Brother, friend and cronyism”. This award will be rewarded L. Akhmedyarov by members of the family of dead Peter Mackler and American Division “Reporters Without Borders”.
Lukpan Akhmedyarov said that “he has taken the award of Peter Mackler as support to all Kazakhstan's journalists, who were threatened, beaten, judged and sometimes killed; after hearing about the award.
