Journalists Safety Assessment launched in Kazakhstan

26 May 2023 Astana hosted a meeting of the Multistakeholder Advisory Board for the preparation of the national report Journalists' Safety Indicators for 2022, which is supported by the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).
The Multistakeholder Advisory Board (MAB) is charged with developing approaches and evaluating methodologies to produce an objective report on the safety of journalists in 2022. The members of the Multilateral Advisory Council, working on a voluntary basis, will contribute to the formation of standards for the preparation of Annual Reports on the Safety of Journalists and the strengthening of freedom of speech in Kazakhstan in accordance with the international commitments undertaken by our country.

Adil Soz the International Foundation for the Protection of Freedom of Speech takes responsibility for the formation of this report, realizing that the quality and methodology of the research can form the basis of the National Report on the Safety of Journalists, which, if approved by the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will be provided to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on an annual basis.
 
It is essential that this report be full, objective, and comprehensive, not only reflecting the positions of all participants in the process and also creating opportunities for systemic change

The meeting of the Multistakeholder Advisory Board was a platform for discussing topical issues related to the safety and protection of journalists' rights. The event included the presentation of the preliminary results and conclusions of the report "Safety Indicators for Journalists for 2022," compiled by leading experts and specialists in the field of journalism.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Information and Public Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Majilis of the Parliament, Department of judicial administration of Astana, journalists, activists, and other stakeholders, who will discuss the problems of safety of journalists and discuss the most effective ways to solve these problems.
During the meeting, there was a lively exchange of views, and many interesting recommendations were made. Representatives of government agencies intend to take some of them on board and discuss them at subsequent MAB meetings. The draft of the report will be presented as early as June, and the presentation of the final document will take place in November.
