Impunity for crimes against journalists remains unacceptably high. UNESCO report
In 2022, more than 70 journalists were killed for performing their work. Most of these crimes remain unsolved. A record number of journalists around the world are in prison, and cases of violence against media workes are on the rise. That is what UN Secretary-General António Guterres told on the International Day to End Impunity against Journalists.
According to the UNESCO report published on November 2, global impunity for the killing of journalists remains shockingly high at 86 percent. From 2006 to 2020, more than 1,200 journalists were killed around the world, and almost 9 out of 10 murders remain officially unsolved.
According to the document there are almost no safe places for a journalist. In 2020-2021, 91 out of 117 journalists killed becuase of with their professional activities, or 78 percent, were killed outside their place of work and in off-hours.
