The court did not imprison participants in attacks on journalists

24 november 2023

On November 21, the Specialized Inter-District Court for Juvenile Affairs in Almaty issued a verdict to five defendants in a case involving attacks on independent journalists.
Recall that from September 2022 to February of this year, independent journalists and media outlets faced threats, assaults, DDoS attacks, and phone bullying. Unknown individuals set fire to their cars, sealed the entrance doors with mounting foam, spread personal information online, and broke windows in the building where the ElMedia editorial office rents an office.
On February 28, the police detained Alexey Tokarev, identified as the coordinator of the attacks, and at the beginning of March, his accomplices were identified. On March 4, the initiator and organizer of the attacks on journalists, Arkadiy Klebanov (Manevich), who according to the investigation, had personal grievances against the media, was arrested.
On November 1, the court ordered Klebanov (Manevich) to a psychiatric hospital for compulsory treatment: according to expert opinions, he suffers from a chronic mental disorder.
On November 21 , the court sentenced Alexey Tokarev to 4 years and 6 months of conditional imprisonment on charges of obstructing the lawful professional activities of journalists, violating the inviolability of private life and personal data, involving minors in committing criminal offenses, making threats, hooliganism, disrupting the operation of an information system, and intentionally damaging another's property.
Four juvenile accomplices of Tokarev were sentenced to one year and four months of restriction of freedom, finding them guilty of hooliganism and deliberate destruction of property.
A total of 3 million tenge was awarded in compensation for moral damages from defendant Tokarev and the legal representatives of the juvenile defendants.
