Statement on Resolving the Situation Regarding Journalist Zhaniya Urankayeva’s Access to the Government Building of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Astana, September 19, 2024
Today, with the assistance of the International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech "Adil Soz", an agreement was reached to resolve the issue of journalist Zhaniya Urankayeva gaining access to the Government Building of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Based on the Foundation's appeal to the Government's Office, the Government's press service has agreed to reconsider the restriction on the journalist’s access to the building until December 31, 2024. Zhaniya Urankayeva can fully resume her professional duties, provided she complies with the requirements of the Pass and On-Site Regulations, as well as other documents governing the activities of media representatives within the Government Building. The provisions of the Law "On Mass Media", which came into effect in August 2024, require journalists to adhere to the established pass and on-site regulations when visiting specially important state and strategic facilities.
Adil Soz expresses its sincere gratitude to the Office of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, particularly to the Government's press service for their commitment to openness and dedication to the principles of fairness and legality. We are grateful for their understanding of the importance of the journalistic profession in conveying socially significant information and for their assistance in ensuring the transparency and openness of government institutions.
The agreement reached is a prime example of constructive dialogue between media representatives and government officials, highlighting the limitless potential for resolving various issues in the interests of Kazakhstan society through dialogue.
