Chief Editor of the newspaper “Alma-ata info” Ramazan Yesergepov is under arrest and went on hunger-strike

Chief Editor of the newspaper “Alma-ata info” Ramazan Yesergepov has been under arrest from January 06, 2009. His wife Raushan Yesergepova has said that journalist went on hunger-strike and refused to give evidences without legal proceeding.
The charges stemmed from article “Who does rule our country: President or CNS?” published in the newspaper on November 21, 2008. There was a fragment of official correspondence of two officials of CNS. DCNS of Zhambyl region has begun its investigation of leakage of operation information. From the beginning Ramazan Yesergepov has been as a witness of this case. On January 06, 2009 he was detained and on December 09, 2008 Yesergepov was arrested as charged person under article 172 “Illegal Obtaining, Divulging of State Secrets” and article 228 “Abuse of Authority”.
Representative Officers of Public Organizations and Independent Mass Media have applied for President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and Public Prosecutor Rashid Tusupbekov with the open letter at the press conference on January 12, 2009. They have asked for them to change preventive punishment to Ramazan Yesergepov and remove this case to non-interested law-enforcement organ.
