Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation sues a US investigative journalism nonprofit for libel
On August 4 Courthouse News Service, a US media, reported that Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation sues an American investigative journalism nonprofit Journalism Development Network for libel. (JDN is a decade-old online news service tracking political and government corruption around the world).
The plaintiff believed that the assumptions made in the article dated January 19, 2022 that the funds of the Foundation are misused, are false and slanderous and discrediting to its business reputation.. «The lawsuit takes issue with the story’s main thrust, saying it “conveys the false and defamatory gist that Plaintiff is a legal fiction through which Mr. Nazarbayev absolutely controls billions of dollars in wealth that is supposed to be earmarked for funding education.”
The lawsuit demands unspecified punitive damages» - writes Courthouse News Service.
The plaintiff is represented by an attorney from a Washington law firm.
In its turn Journalism Development Network told Courthouse News Service that the suit had no merit and OCCRP stood by its story.
