Radio Azattyk correspondent Saniya Toyken detained in Zhanaozen
The correspondent of Radio Azattyk, Saniya Toyken, who is in Zhanaozen as assigned by the editorial office, was detained again. According to Sania’s friend Zhuldyz Aday, on March 11 in the evening they went to a cafe for dinner. At that time, there was a quarrel between the visitors. The police officers who arrived to the cafe detained and took to the police station not only the parties of the conflict, by the journalist and her companion for an unknown reason. According to Azattyk radio, a local resident Gulnar Tanirbergenova was next to the journalist at the moment of her detention. She said that she and Toyken were talking at the table in a separate section of the cafe. “The police told us that we were on the spot where the fight took place. Despite our objections, we were put in a separate car and taken to the police station, ”said Tanirbergenova. At half past seven in the morning on March 12 Tanirbergenova reported that she could not find out where Sania Toyken was, why she was detained and why she was not answering phone calls.The press service of the police department of the Mangystau region has not yet commented on this detention. According to Zhuldyz Aday, at midday on March 12, Saniya was taken to the administrative court of the city of Zhanaozen. Neither then nor today did the police explain why they detained the journalist.
