Police tried to detain a staff reporter of “Express K” newspaper Nurzhan Baymuldin

14 march 2019

On March 14, the staff reporter of the newspaper "Express K" Nurzhan Baymuldin arrived in Akmola Department of Public Health for a round table that was supposed to begin at 3 PM.

However, two police officers that were guarding the building said they would perform a security check, demanded from journalist to take everything out of his pockets and said that they would check him with a hand-held metal detector for having prohibited items. The correspondent asked them what legal documents were the basis of such a thorough search of citizens.

The police have referred to some instructions under the  operatively preventive measures “Karu”, but they did not show any legislative acts. The Department's chiefs came down and confirmed that the Baimuldin arrived at their invitation and asked to let him in, but the guards refused. After that, the journalist wanted to leave, but sergeant Seitov called an investigation team of the Kokshetau Directorate of Internal Affairs. Then sergeant Seytov  instructed the second sergeant not to let the journalist out of the building so that he wouldn't run away. As the result, Nurzhan Baymuldin was illegally held in the building until three police cars arrived. The arrived officers did not introduce themselves, checked the journalist's documents, but did nothing to stop the illegal actions of sergeant Seytov, who illegally detained the journalist.

The journalist explained the situation to the law enforcement officers who arrived at Seitov’s call, the staff reporter of “Express K”  had to leave. This fact has been reported to the duty prosecutor of Kokshetau and to the duty officer of the Kokshetau police department.
