The delegates of assembly "Kazakhstani Media Alliance" have applied to Kairat Mami, chairman of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, asking to set Seitkazy and Aset Matayev free.
"Well known Kazakhstani journalist, irreplaceable head of the Union of Journalist of Kazakhstan Seitkazy Matayev has been under arrest and in custody for more than 1.5 years. Without giving any estimation to the criminal case and the verdict, we ask to consider change of penalty in respect of Seitkazy Beisengaziyevich and Aset Matayev from imprisonment in a colony into limitation of freedom," reads the statement.
It is marked that S. Matayev is highly respected among the journalists and the public.
"Seitkazy Matayev is a famous journalist and a public figure in Kazakhstan, ex press-secretary of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a person who has high authority among colleagues and public. Nor he, neither his son are socially dangerous, they are not tough criminals and do not pose any threat to the society," reads the statement.
The authors of the statement outlined the international resonance of S. Matayev case and its impact on the authority of Kazakhstan on the international arena.
"The Matayev case which got international resonance, does not contribute into strengthening of image of Kazakhstan, and any performance of humanism, made within the frameworks of the legal field, would neutralize tough estimations and accusations voiced in the address of our state by foreign organizations for human rights and mass media. One of them was reduction of term of sentence within the frameworks of the amnesty, next logical step would be change of the form of punishment," reads the statement.
The authors of the statement emphasized that S. Matayev needs medical aid.
"Change of the penalty into restriction of freedom will give a chance to S. Matayev for qualified medical aid, including surgery which he needs," reads the document.
The authors of the statement reminded that Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan, in his speech made at the opening ceremony of the fourth session of Parliament on September 1 indicated "humanization of criminal punishment" as one of key components of the legal reform", "one of the initial steps of practical performance of this initiative might be an appropriate approach to the loud and dramatic "Matayev case".
"Humanism is one of the main principles of justice. We believe its application in this unordinary case is a great chance to demonstrate to Kazakh society and the world, that the judicial system of Kazakhstan is based on performance of this principle," the document concluded.
