Sania Toiken is awarded for courage in journalism

12 may 2017

Journalist Sania Toiken became the first Kazakhstani journalist to be awarded the International Women's Media Award (IWMF) in the nomination "For Courage in Journalism".

Sania has been working in the city of Aktau for many years, as a reporter for the Kazakh edition of Radio Azattyk "Free Europe" / "Free Europe" / "Free Europe" and the republican edition of "Zhas Alash" magazine. She also published a popular newspaper "Ne Khabar?". The journalist was systematically subjected to harassment and threats for her professional work, truthful and objective coverage of events related to the situation of oil workers, in particular, their multi-month strike. It is not easier for her now ...

Sania Toiken was awarded a prestigious international award, along with NPR radio journalist Deborah Amos, who works in the Middle East, and a reporter for Al-Jazeera TV channel Hadel Al-Yamani from Yemen.

Among the previous winners of this award are such well-known journalists as Christian Amanpour (1994), Anna Politkovskaya (2000), Khadija Ismailova (2012), Anna Nemtsova (2015). Central Asia has so far been presented in this category only by Kyrgyz journalist Zamira Sydykova.

The International Foundation for the Protection of Freedom of Speech "Әdіl sөz" sincerely congratulates Sania Toiken on the high and deserved award.
