Chief Editor of newspaper "Alma-Ata Info" Ramazan Yesergepov intended to go on hunger-strike

Convicted in August 2009 editor-in-chief of independent newspaper "Alma-Ata Info" Ramazan Yesergepov has made an open letter for heads of states-participants of the OSCE. He provided facts of improper situation with human rights in Kazakhstan. Yesergepov has said about his intension to go on hunger-strike on July 06, 2010. It will be continued before solution of the situation with human rights and freedoms in Kazakhstan by OSCE.

There was a opening of criminal case against Ramazan Esergepov in January 2009. He was charged under article 172 “Illegal Obtaining, Divulging of State Secrets “ and article 228 “Abuse of Authority” of Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The charges stemmed from article “Who does rule our country President or CNS?”, which was published in the newspaper “Alma-Ata Info” on November 21, 2008. There was a publication of the letter of Chief of Zhambyl Regional Department of Committee of National Security, which was provided for Chairman of CNS Amangeldy Schabdarbayev. Criminal case was opened against company “Taraz” and founder of this company Sultan Makhmadov, who tried to meet with President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev with the purpose to influence on investigative process.

There was a close legal proceeding in court №2 of Taraz. Ramazan Esergepov was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in colony with a general regime. Court of Appeal Instance and Supervisory Board of Zhambyl Regional Court remained sentence in force. This sentence was passed in spite of article 19 of Criminal Procedural Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Human rights activists and journalists were unsatisfied by illegal actions in relation to Ramazam Esergepov during investigative process and legal proceeding. He did not see even indictment and take a copy of conviction. Court should hand out these documents.
