Best Reporting on Human Rights Issues Contest

BEST REPORTING ON HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES CONTEST  

    The contest is announced under the project Building Central Asian Human Rights Protection and Education Through the Media. 

Objectives of the contest:

  •  

    • To promote observance and honor of human rights and freedoms,

    • To make coverage of issues related to human rights violations more effective,

    • To promote legal knowledge among residents of Central Asian countries,

    • To improve public awareness in the field of human rights,

    • Promotion of high journalists’ professionalism in this field.




 

    The participants of the contest may submit articles on the subject of human rights in the context of important social, political, economic and cultural events.

    Journalists working for printed sources, photojournalists and journalists working for Internet publications are eligible to participate. 

    Main contest categories:

    Print publications – not more than 3 analytical articles or broadened informational or analytical articles on chosen subject.

    On-line Mass-media – not more than 3 analytical articles or broadened informational reports on chosen subject.

    Photojournalism – not less than 3 photo essays (starting from 5 photos) on chosen subject. We accept photos in jpg raw (nef) formats with the resolution not less than 2400 x 3000. 

    Additional contest categories:

    Recognition gifts for journalistic entries on special categories are planed to be presented within the framework of the contest:

  1. A right to adequate housing and legal safeguards to protect this right, eg. forced evictions and demolishing, problems of homelessness, etc.

      2. Coverage of issues related to tortures, assaults, illegal arrests and prison placement

      3. Coverage of issues related to the freedom of speech, thoughts and freedom of the press

      4. Coverage of the issues related to freedom of movement.






 

    The contest entries will be evaluated by members of Contest committee according to the following criteria:

  • Credibility: the contest entries should include correct figures, facts and other information;

  • Topicality: theme and content of the contest entries should comprehensively reflect specific situations in the field of human rights protection in Central Asia, disclose real issues and indicate possible ways of tackling the issues;

  • Analytical approach: the contest entries uncovering and showing connection between human rights issues and major social, political, economic and cultural events in a country are welcomed;

  • Availability: the contest entries should be presented in clear style; in clear and understandable language for a target audience;

  • Effectiveness: it is welcomed if the contest entries provoke a stir among the public and promote public discussion of the issues raised;

  • Expressiveness: authors of the contest entries should competently use the whole package of expressive means intrinsic to this or that kind of mass-media;

  • Creativeness: unconventional approach to environment issues reporting is welcomed – both in the form of presenting material as well as the content;

  • Impartiality: the contest entries should contain balanced and unbiased information.


 

    Conditions of participation:

    Entries published on the territory of Central Asia from January 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010 are accepted to the contest.

    Participants should present their entries to a Contest Committee to take part in the contest. The entries should be presented in electronic form (CD, electronic versions of printed material can be sent by e-mail); a participant should have a confirmation of publication (photocopy of newspaper/magazine page, screenshots of Internet-pages); they should contain a brief information on materials and outcome after publication, if there’s any.

    One author or a creative team can apply not more than 3 entries.

    Working languages of a contest are Russian and the state languages of Central Asian countries.

    If an entry applied for the contests had been written in a co-authorship all other authors should be notified before the entry is applied. The organizers are not responsible in case of dispute on author’s rights.

    The entries sent to the contest are not reviewed or returned.

    The selected entries applied to the contest will be published at IWPR web-site (www.iwpr.net) and partners’ web-sites.

    The organizers reserve the right to use the entries sent to a contest in the future.

    Scientific publications, materials/reports from workshops, trainings, conferences, round tables and materials that do not correspond to a subject area of the contest are not accepted to a contest.

    Submission of entries to the contest means accepting above-listed “Conditions of participation in the contest”. 

The following cash awards are instituted for each category: 

Print mass-media      1 place –  $ 1000

                               2 place - $ 700

                               3 place -  $ 500

On-line mass-media      1 place – $ 1000

                                   2 place - $ 700

                                   3 place - $ 500 

 Photojournalism     1 place – $ 1000

                              2 place - $ 700

                              3 place - $ 500 

Awards for the project’s special categories:

    • Women and children rights issues coverage - $ 300

    • Coverage of issues related to tortures, assaults, illegal arrests and prison placement - $ 300

    • Coverage of issues related to the freedom of speech, thoughts and freedom of the press - $ 300

    • Coverage of the issues related to freedom of movement - $ 300




 

Recognition gifts for special categories are also provided 

 The Contest committee will include:

  •  

    • Representatives of human rights organizations in Central Asia

    • Leading journalists/editors and experts in mass-media

    • Representatives of Institute for War and Peace Reporting and the partners who organized the contest




 

    Winners awarding will take place on December 10, 2010 on International Human Rights Day in Almaty, Bishkek and Dushanbe 

    Contest organizing committee reserves the right:

    - to estimate correspondence of an entry to a declared subject;

    - to turn down the entry if it is not corresponding to the requirements listed in the provision on the contest;

    - in addition to juries to attract experts on one or another human rights organization for more adequate assessment of some entries;

-         to show copies of the entries at exhibitions and other events for informative and educational purposes.
