Monitoring of status of freedom of speech in Kazakhstan February, 2014 (Digest)
In February, 2014 monitoring of international foundation for protection of freedom of speech «Adil Soz» has registered 91 reports. There were:
- Newspaper«Pravdivaya Gazeta» was closed under court decision;
- Journalists of television channel «5 Kanal» (“Fifth Channel”) Ludmila Batushkina and Svetlana Dement were charged with libel;
- Suit was instituted against newspaper «Zerkalo» (“Mirror”) in the amount of KZT3000000 (1USD= 182.05);
- Coalition of NGOs «Zhiyrmasynshi Bap» (20th Article of Constitution of Kazakhstan) has made an appeal to members of Parliament, concerning repressive tendencies of regulation of freedom of expression.
In general, since the start of the year media outlets and citizens in connection with exercise of right to freedom of expression, receiving and dissemination of information dealt with:
- 18 claims and suits on protection of honour, dignity and business reputation (3 of them are – passed data) in the amount of KZT eighteen millions forty hundreds and thousands;
- 4 charges with libel and slander (including one charge upon passed data)
