How will the Ministry of Information and Social Development protect The Village journalists?
On August 31, the-village-kz.com published an article by Asem Zhapisheva "A boy from Abai: how the victims live three years after the violence"
The very next day, journalist Asem Zhapisheva reported that she had to turn off both of her mobile phones and could not even check the messages. According to her, some unknown people began to threat her by phone after the article was published. They introduced themselves as officials of various departments and demanded to delete the article.
The wide publicity of the situation was followed by the reaction of the Ministry of Information and Social Development (MISD). The ministry called the pressure on journalists and the media unacceptable and expressed its readiness "to assist in protecting the rights of journalists."
"Adil soz" comments:
Such an intention is of course welcomed, but it is not yet clear what exactly the MISD is going to do to protect the authors of the article. The documents regulating the activities of this ministry do say absolutely nothing about increasing the safety of journalists. We would like to hope that the promised protection will happen with the active participation of the police, since a threat is a criminal offense under the Article 115 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
