"Justice for Journalists": Attacks on Media Workers in 2020
On June 8, human rights organization Justice for Journalists (JFJ, London) published its annual report Attacks on Media Workers in 2020.
The study is an analysis of attacks against media workers and editorial offices of traditional and online media in 12 post-Soviet countries (excluding the Baltic states).
Human rights watchdog states that in 2020 the number of threats that media workers faced in their work increased 2.5 times (4611 cases) compared to 1907 last year. The main source of threats were still government officials.
Among the main factors of tightening the working conditions for journalists, JFJ names enforcing new laws and regulations that limit media workers' access to information and freedom of movement under the pretext of Covid-19 restrictions and the fight against fake news, mass protests of citizens caused by the political, economic and social situation.
