Violations of freedom of speech in Kazakhstan May, 2015 (Digest)

International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech "Adil Soz" has conducted a survey of violations of right to freedom of expression, receiving and dissemination of information in May, 2015 in Kazakhstan.

There was following information:

- In Pavlodar, editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Version» Yaroslav Golyshkin was arrested;

- Criminal proceeding against editor of the newspaper «Issykskiy Vestnik» A. Musabaeva (in particularly, she was charged) was closed;

- Cassation instance has upheld judgment of acquittal. The judgment of acquittal was awarded with regard to journalist Oksana Zhivitskaya.

In May, five judicial acts of earlier considered cases over suits on protection of honour, dignity and business reputation were passed in March. They also, included two in appellate instance; three of them in favour of journalists and citizens.

Since the beginning of the year in connection with execution of right to freedom of expression, receiving and dissemination of information, they were brought:

- 8 charges with slander (incl. passing data – 2);

- 3 charges with incitement of national enmity;

- 3 charges with dissemination of misleading information (article 274 of Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan).

- 39 pre-trial claims and suits on protection of honour, dignity and business reputation.

From January, courts considered 21 cases over suits on protection of honour, dignity and business reputation in the total amount of KZT553millions and 600 thousands.
