Violations of freedom of speech in Kazakhstan. September 2017

The International Foundation for the Protection of Freedom of Speech Adil Soz made a study of the situation with the right to freedom of expression, receipt and dissemination of information in Kazakhstan in September 2017.

It reports:

- Editor-in-chief of the newspaper Sayasi Kalam. Tribuna "Zhanbolat Mamai was sentenced to three years of restriction of freedom with confiscation of property. The journalist was released from arrest in the courtroom.

- Human rights defenders propose to exclude proposals for amendments and additions to the Law "On Mass Media" from the draft law "On Amendments and Additions to Some Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Information and Communications".

 - The criminal charges against Lukpan Akhmedyarov on insulting a policeman were dropped for lack of corpus delicti.

4 criminal charges were brought againt media and citizens in connection with the exercise of the right to freedom of expression, the receipt and dissemination of information in September 

 50 trial and pre-tiral criminal charges were  brought in connection with the exercise of the right to freedom of expression, instruction and dissemination of information since the beginning of the year.

Four judicial acts were issued on cases of protection of honor, dignity and business reputation (including 1 in cassation, 1 in appeal). One of them was in favor of the media, journalists and citizens in September.

63 letters before action and claims for protection of honor, dignity and business reputation were filed in connection with the exercise of the right to freedom of expression since the beginning of the year. Claims for compensation for moral damage in January-August amounted to 184 million 960 thousand tenge. The courts collected 54 million 20 thousand tenge.
