The International Foundation for the Protection of Freedom of Speech "Adil Soz" conducted a study of the situation with the right to freedom of expression, receipt and dissemination of information in Kazakhstan in June 2017.

Among the messages:

- The Minister of Information and Communications presented the draft Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Amendments and Additions to Some Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Information and Communications" to the Majilis of the Parliament. According to human rights activists, the bill contains a number of tougher measures, contradictious to the international standards of freedom of speech.

- Editor-in-chief of Ratel.kz Marat Asipov sued providing socially significant information.

- Head of the State Institution "Department of Education of the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk" accuses the correspondent of the newspaper "Kazakhstanskaya Pravda" of libel for her published article about paid courses for teachers.

- The Appeals Board of the Almaty City Court legalized the decision of the court of first instance on the lawsuit of the Kakimzhanovs to the Internet portal Ratel.kz and the magazine Forbes.kz.

8 judicial acts were issued on cases of protection of honor, dignity and business reputation (including 1 act issued by court of appeal) in June/ Five of them were issued in favor of media, journalists and citizens. Claims for compensation for moral damage in January-May amounted to 153 million 660 thousand tenge. The courts ordered to collect 51 million 720 thousand tenge.

5 pre-trial claims and claims for the protection of honor, dignity and business reputation against media and citizens in connection with the exercise of the right to freedom of expression, the receipt and dissemination of information were brought in June.

35 charges of commiting criminal offenses anf crimes caused by exercising of the right to freedom of expression, receiving and dissemination of information the have been filed since the beginng if the year.
